The Comoros islands, which are found in the Mozambique Channel in the Indian Ocean, provide all that is needed for a full, fun vacation. Island attractions are found here in abundance and one will find plenty to see and do in this oasis. Whether you like local culture, beach fun, historic attractions, or outdoor activities, the Comoros Islands have everything you need and more. Beaches in the island nation provide a place for you to experience what most vacationers flock to the tropics for-plenty of sun. Soak in the sun or frolic on the beach, here either is possible. White sand can be seen for miles on the beaches of this island location. Swimming, building sand castles, and sunbathing are the most common beach activities at places like Planet Plage, Niumashuwa Bay, and Chomoni Beach. The picturesque beaches are known for the great photo opportunities they present as well. Visiting beaches also allows you the chance to see nesting green turtles, which is another rare site for most vacationers. If you visit the lagoon that encompasses Mahore, you will find canoe racing events to watch or participate in; this is a thrilling activity for anyone new to the islands. Other options include renting canoes for sightseeing tours or renting sailboats for pleasure cruises in the tropical oasis. Use the boating time to look for exotic species found in the waters around the tropical islands. In the waters surrounding different islands, you may be privy to seeing some of the exclusive species each island plays host to. The waters of the Comoros islands provide the opportunity to participate in a number of amusing activities. Snorkeling in the coral reefs of the Comoros Islands is one of the most amazing things a person can do. Swimming underwater with the various species that reside near the islandsÂ’ reefs is a popular adventure among those who travel to the Comoros. Fishing is another activity that many enjoy; species include the endangered coelacanth (please release), sailfish, and sunfish. Diving gets you closer to the fish and marine life; tours are operated by the hotels in the area. Going it alone requires a special permit and one will need to commission a boat for the day. Sailboarding is another highly popular activity in the Comoros. Gambling, which is found in two casinos on the island, provide guests respite from Mother NatureÂ’s perfection. Gambling, in any form, is rare for Muslim countries, so this feature of the island nation is unique. The two casinos one can visit while vacationing in the Comoros are Itsandra Resort and Casino and Le Galawa Beach Hotel and Casino. Games found in the Comoros include, Blackjack, slots, Roulette, and Caribbean Stud Poker. If you want to experience the thrill of a good hand, visit one of the islandÂ’s two casinos. History and culture can also be found on the islands. In Domoni, embroidery and woodcarving masterpieces can be found. The historic town dates back to 1274 AD. Dilapidated, but delightful, the old town was once home to Arab merchants and their African slaves. Other attractions in the area include many lovely mosques and the tomb of former president President Ahmed Abdallah Abderemane. Another ancient, but less well known location, is Foumbouni, which is located on the east coast of Grande Comore. Once the Sultan of BadjiniÂ’s capital, this lovely location has a much more striking environment than many of the old towns in the Comoros. The town is well known for the pottery that is made here; it is popular with all those who do venture to this secluded sanctuary. Another interesting historical stop in this city is the Portuguese sailorsÂ’ graves, which are located seven miles from Foumbouni. Iconi, which is the oldest settlement on Grande Comore, was the administrative capital for the Sultan of Bambao. The location was damaged by pirating between the 16th and 19th centuries, but is still worth a stop for the outlying buildings still on site. Moroni affords guests the chance to imagine they have traveled back in time; ancient alleyways and bazaars of old add to this atmosphere. Mwali (Moheli) provides guests the cultural opportunity to see dhows, or Arab boats, made by hand. Visit the hot sulphur springs at Lac Sale, or the fishing village of Itsandra; no matter what interests you, there is something to do in the Comoros. Hiking is one of the best ways to see all that the island has to offer. If you wish to see sights such as wild animals, exotic flora, and spectacular waterfalls, you need to explore the islands by hiking. The undeveloped island of Moheli provides guests with hiking terrain such as scenic beaches and thick jungle environments; animal sightings such as maki lemurs can be part of your adventure on Moheli as well. Mayotte has some lovely options for hikers as well. If one is experienced in climbing and you want a challenge, Mount Karthala is just the ticket. Guides are available and most depart from MÂ’vouni and Boboni. When going into these guided hikes, one should note that it will take two days to reach the summit and climb back down. You must carry all supplies for the overnight trip, so you had better pack lightly. Guests will fall in love with the tropical paradise that is the Comoros. Exotic species, which can be found nowhere else on earth, are waiting to be captured by your camera. Pristine beaches await swimmers and sunbathers who venture to the Comoros. Scenic hiking, sailing, visiting ancient towns, and bathing in tropical lagoons are just a few of the activities which will enthrall guests. |
